The Internet is one of the most powerful tools available to learners of all ages, but with that power comes great responsibility.
In an effort to keep kids safe and help them make the most of the Internet, we need to be help prepare them to make smart decisions. During their years here at Center/Sylvester we utilize a variety of resources to build skills and awareness. In 4th grade we focus on curriculum and web explorations provided by the FBI (SOS - Safe Online Surfing) and Google (Be Internet Awesome). FBI's SOS site and Google's Interland and Be Internet Awesome curriculum teaches kids the fundamentals of digital citizenship and safety so they can explore the online world with confidence.
As a culminating project students utilized an online presentation tool, Powtoon Working with partners they were asked to choose one theme from the Be Internet Awesome curriculum: Smart, Alert, Strong, Kind, Brave. Then, using an abridged packet I created, they summarized and pulled key elements to include in their animated slideshows. Their creativity and collaboration on these projects, along with their technical skills and Internet safety knowledge, was just AWESOME!! I've included links to the interactive websites we used and the resources I created from the Google curriculum below. And be sure to check out the student projects too!!!
