How to Begin - Week 1
Remember, programming projects are never easy or completed perfectly on the first (and sometimes forty-first) attempts. Start small, choose something you feel is manageable for you, and be patient with yourself and the project.
First, decide what type of game you would like to create: Racing, Catch, Escape, Maze, or Platform? Explore the different options below before making a final decision. For each link/game that you explore, be sure to:
Play • Think • Share • Brainstorm - Start to form your ideas for your very own game!!
First, decide what type of game you would like to create: Racing, Catch, Escape, Maze, or Platform? Explore the different options below before making a final decision. For each link/game that you explore, be sure to:
- Read the instructions (if there are any).
- Play the game
- Notice how the sprites move. Which do you control and how? Which run independently from the script?
- How are points earned and/or lost?
- How does the game end?
- Click the See Inside button to look at the script.
- Click through the different Sprites to see the program for each.
- Look at Sprite Costumes - How do they enhance the game?
- Click on the background and background "costume" tab to see if the background is programmed to change. Some games have A LOT!

Racing Games
Try some of these race style games. Be sure to LOOK INSIDE to see how they are created.

Now that you've had a chance to explore some games and take a look inside their codes, you should be ready to begin planning your game. Be sure you have thought through the elements listed below:
- What will your game environment (background) be? Will the environment stay the same or change throughout the game?
- What elements of your environment need to be added as separate objects or sprites? Anything that moves or interacts with the player must be separate.
- What will your players or sprites look like? Will they need different poses or costumes?
- What is the goal of the game: reach something, catch something, escape from something, achieve something.....
- How will the game conclude? Will you keep score? Will it be based on a time?
Ready to Begin? Find the category of game style you would like to create. Click the links below to explore some of the programming options and coding tools you will need to use. The links will direct you to a page organized by CS First and into games programmed in SCRATCH.
