Kindergarten Library Program
Students in kindergarten begin the year attending a traditional library class once a week. They hear a story, discuss basic literary elements, and have an opportunity to select a book on their own to borrow for one week. They are also given an activity to work on alone or with others at a table for a few different reasons.:
It provides a focused activity for students that select their books quickly and need a clear defined task to promote appropriate independent library behaviors.
It also provides an opportunity for students to do what good readers do by responding to text, or telling if they liked the book or not.
The activity also helps students share part of their day with you at home, and can promote opportunities for them to further their skills as readers by summarizing text or making inferences or connections to their own lives. These papers are never collected or expected to be completed unless a student would like to continue at home. It is intended as a tool to establish a productive library learning environment for the students.
As we progress through the year, and students demonstrate readiness, we will begin to transition our of Library mode and into our Information Technology model. Students will spend more time engaged in technology activities, developing essential skills for technical literacy and competency. They will follow the circulation calendar along with students in grades 1-4, alternating computer instruction with library/book check out. You can find the Circulation Calendar under the I.T. Information tab above.
